8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For,
‘Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. 11 They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.’
13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. ‘Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.’ 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
1 Peter 3.8-15 (NIV)

Kelvin used this passage at our online prayer meeting in March, and it seemed very appropriate to the work of CCND. I was struck that in verse 9, Peter uses practically the same phrase as Paul uses in Romans 12.17: ‘Do not repay anyone evil for evil.’ And the quotation from Psalm 34 includes words which have almost become a motto for CCND: ‘Seek peace and pursue it.’ I added the last few verses, as I think they are also very relevant to our cause and how we seek to further it. In the light of your commitment to nuclear disarmament, I wonder what strikes you in these verses.

Let us pray together this month:

  • that in all our prayer and action we might revere the risen Christ as Lord
  • for the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace camp over Easter, including the ‘Give Peace a Chance Protest’ on Holy Saturday (4 April); may it be powerful and effective
  • for the Church Commissioners (Church of England) to be willing to revise their investment policy to exclude any investment in nuclear weapons
  • for the Church Commissioners (Church of England) to be willing to revise their investment policy to exclude any investment in nuclear weapons
  • for our connections with CND and other organisations; may we bear more fruit by working together
    using Pope Leo’s March prayer intention ‘for disarmament and peace’: www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2026-03/pope-s-march-prayer-intention-for-disarmament-and-peace.html He stated, ‘May the nuclear threat never again dictate the future of humanity.’

A Prayer

May the nations learn not to fear one another, but to revere the Lord Jesus;
may they seek peace and pursue it;
and may the risen Christ grant us hope for a world free of nuclear weapons. Amen.
