I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.Â
1 Timothy 2.1-4 (NIV)
It’s so easy to find things that are wrong with our leaders and to criticise them, and it’s especially easy if you’re against nuclear weapons! But in these verses from 1 Timothy, written at a time when Christians were being persecuted by the authorities, there’s no mention of criticism. Rather, they are urged to pray for ‘all people’, including ‘all those in authority’. This month, let us pray especially for those in authority, bearing in mind that God wants them, along with everyone else, to be saved.
We pray:
- for Donald Trump and his deal that will allow Saudi Arabia to develop a civilian nuclear programme; this runs the risk of future nuclear proliferation in an already unstable region. Meanwhile, the USA continues to attack Iran to stop them developing nuclear weapons.
- for Andy Burnham, John Healey, Ed Miliband and Wes Streeting in their approach to foreign policy, defence, and defence expenditure
- for events to mark the anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima (6 August) and Nagasaki (9 August); we lament the fact that American and European leaders decided to commit these heinous atrocities
- for our fellowship within CCND; for more people to join the Executive Committee, including a treasurer, later this year
A prayer
Loving God, we pray for world leaders and all who hold authority, that you would guide them to make wise decisions, so that we might live peaceful and quiet lives without the threat of nuclear disasters or war; in Jesus’ name. Amen.
