13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. 16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Galatians 5.13-16 (NIV)
‘Today, humanity is just one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation. We need the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as much as ever. That is why this Review Conference is so important. It’s an opportunity to hammer-out the measures that will help avoid certain disaster. And to put humanity on a new path towards a world free of nuclear weapons.’
ANTÓNIO GUTERRES, United Nations Secretary-General
Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the NPT
1 August 2022, New York
Let us pray together this month:
- for the Review Conference of States Parties to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) at the UN, which began on 27 April and runs until 22 May. CCND has endorsed a joint letter organised by Nuclear Abolition Day, which will be presented to the Conference
- for an end to the conflict between the USA / Israel (both nuclear armed states) and Iran
- for those who still suffer from the effects of the Chernobyl disaster 40 years ago
- for the Holy Spirit to touch our fellowship within CCND; for more people to join the Executive Committee later this year
A Prayer
God of love and peace, we pray for a world in which the leaders of nations do not ‘bite and devour each other’, threatening one another’s citizens with nuclear weapons, but rather seek to love one another. We pray that one day the world will be free from the curse of nuclear weapons; in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen.
