Christian CND Prayer Diary – November

Please join Christian CND in praying this month as we intercede for issues here and around the world. We believe God has the power to move in all these situations and that prayer goes hand in hand with our campaigning efforts. There are many things to be thankful for as well as issues we want to bring before God.

Join us this month as we pray on Zoom
Wednesday 16 November @ 1pm
Tuesday 29 November @ 8pm

Things to thank God for

  • The support which the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons received during recent votes at the UN
  • The new CCND Exec which starts working together this month

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine
He pours contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty. He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings utter darkness into the light. He makes nations great, and destroys them; he enlarges nations, and disperses them – Job 12:21-23
As the conflict enters its tenth month Russian bombing of Ukrainian infrastructure has intensified which has led to lack of energy and water supplies for many – exacerbating the suffering already being caused by the war. Discussions around the likelihood of Russian use of nuclear weapons continued last month, with UK Defence Secretary making a unplanned trip to Washington DC and continued speculation that some in Russia are urging Vladimir Putin to use “small” nuclear weapons. Russia also withdrew from the agreement to allow grain exports to resume, which could have disastrous knock-on effects for people around the world.

Please pray with us

  • Pray for those involved in the relief effort in Ukraine
  • Pray for those living with lack of energy and water in Ukraine
  • Pray for those who have been displaced and those worrying about loved ones left behind
  • Pray that the grain export arrangement would be re-established soon
  • Pray for a speedy diplomatic solution to the crisis

Situation on the Korean Peninsula
Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble – 1 Peter 3:8
The situation in the region continues to be incredibly dangerous, with more than 20 missiles tested on a single day last month. There have also been further military exercises undertaken by the US and South Korea, amid fears that the North Koreans may be planning the nuclear test for some years. Christian CND has been in touch with our friends in the Bargn Nuri Community in South Korea to express our solidarity and assure them of our prayers.

Please pray with us

  • Thank God that the current tensions around missile tests have not escalated
  • Pray that there would not be a nuclear weapons test by North Korea
  • Pray that the international community would find a solution to the situation
  • Pray for those living in the region under the threat of nuclear weapons use, including the Bargn Nuri Community

Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! – Amos 5:24
At a meeting of the United Nations First Committee 124 states supported a resolution in support of the Treaty and calling for great adherence to it. In a separate vote 141 states voted in support of a resolution which expressed “deep concern about the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons” and stressing “that it is in the interest of the very survival of humanity that nuclear weapons never be used again, under any circumstances”. The resolution also urged UN members “to exert all efforts to totally eliminate the threat of these weapons of mass destruction”.

Please pray with us

  • Thank God for the states that supported these resolutions at the UN
  • Thank God for the diplomats who continue to work on the Treaty behind the scenes
  • Thank God for the role that churches and wider civil society have played in bringing the Treaty to this stage
  • Pray that these states signing the Treaty will quickly complete ratification
  • Pray that more states, including those nuclear-armed, would engage with the Treaty

US Nuclear Weapons in the UK
But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always – Hosea 12:6
There has yet to be any confirmation or denial that US nuclear weapons will be returning to the UK – with RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk thought to be the location if it is to happen. This would represent a step backwards in the international situation and could increase tensions at an already dangerous time. Christian CND is supporting the CND demonstration at Lakenheath this month and will continue to pray that these weapons to do return to UK soil.

Please pray with us

  • Pray for the demonstration which is taking place on 19 November – that there would be a good attendance and it would lead to increased awareness
  • Thank God for those who have been opposing nuclear weapons at RAF Lakenheath in the past, and for the new support this year
  • Pray that the American nuclear weapons would not return to the base and others in Europe ear-marked for infrastructure upgrades

Please keep the Christian CND staff team and Exec in your prayers.
