The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists had announced that the Doomsday Clock will be staying at 100 seconds to midnight for a second consecutive year. It is the closet that the experts have ever judged humanity to be to the catastrophe that “midnight” would represent.
While the Covid pandemic appears to be easing and the administration change in the United States has made the world somewhat more stable, there are still many nuclear-related issues which feature in the security analysis which led to the time being set so close to midnight.
- Tensions between the United States and Russia and China, with all three modernising and expanding their nuclear arsenals
- The increasing deployment by China of long-range nuclear missiles
- The stalling talks to reinvigorate the Iran nuclear deal
- The apparent success of North Korea in securing and continuing to develop nuclear weapons
While the trends appear deeply concerning, as Christians we have the assured peace and comfort of Jesus Christ – He is the Prince of Peace and He has the government on His shoulders.
While we look forward to the day when there is no more war and suffering, we continue to pray for our nation and our world. We pray that there would be progress not only in tackling nuclear threats but also the other existential crisis facing us all – climate change.
