Christian CND has joined the Network of Christian Peace Organisations in issuing the following statement about the current situation with Iran.
Tensions in the region have been increasing for some time, but the decision by the United States to carry out the extra-judicial killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by drone strike has taken the Middle East to a dangerous new place. Iran carried out an attack on two Iraqi bases which currently house US forces shortly afterwards.
Since the killing of Qasem Soleimani US President Donald Trump has threatened to destroy more than 50 cultural sites throughout Iran, something which is illegal under international law.
Along with many others throughout the world Christian CND reiterates our call for calm in the region. We are encouraged that the situation hasn’t escalated but there is no room for complacency. The only way to secure a lasting peace is through dialogue and negotiation, rather than military strikes and threats of war.
Please join us as we continue to pray for the situation. You can find fuel for your prayers in our Prayer Diary.
