Catholic Bishops supports calls for nuclear disarmament

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Scotland have issued a joint statement on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which will enter into legal force on Friday 22 January.

The statement follows a joint statement which was issued in August 2020 and an open-letter from 31 Anglican Bishops which called on the UK to join the Treaty.

We urge support for the Treaty and repeat our call for the UK to forsake its nuclear arsenal.

The Treaty, which was agreed in 2017 with the support of 122 states at the United Nations, will ban nuclear weapons in the same way as chemical and biological weapons have been banned.

The statement described the Treaty as an “historic milestone on the path to nuclear disarmament and an opportunity to refocus on genuine peacebuilding rooted in dialogue, justice, respect for human dignity, and care for our planet.”
