A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span. He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armour of bronze weighing five thousand shekels; on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. His shield-bearer went ahead of him.

1 Samuel 17.4-7 (NIV)

The climax of this chapter is very well-known: young David defeats the giant with a sling and a stone – and faith in God. But it’s worth dwelling on this description of Goliath’s armour. It’s very impressive! What might the equivalent be today? A nuclear weapon, perhaps? But the armour didn’t defend Goliath – it proved useless.

Let us pray together this month:

  • for those attending the NATO Summit in Ankara (7-8 July); for the effectiveness of an open letter to the Prime Minister from Rethinking Security and Quakers in Britain which CCND has signed
  • for the next Prime Minister, the UK government, and all our political leaders at this time of change; may their eyes will be opened to the devastating reality of nuclear weapons, and may they have the courage to steer the UK towards a new path – one that rejects the false security of mass destruction and instead embraces the pursuit of global nuclear disarmament
  • the Qazaq Nuclear Frontline Coalition’s policy paper From Harm to Justice is being launched by ICAN on 2 July; please pray for the recognition, accountability, redress, better healthcare, environmental remediation needed by nuclear-affected communities; for them to be given a meaningful role in decisions that affect their lives
  • CND’s Independence From America Day (4 July) protests and action
  • for our fellowship within CCND; for more people to join the Executive Committee, including a treasurer, later this year

A Prayer

‘Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight,

be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might.’

Dear Lord, give us strength to persevere as we battle against dark spiritual forces;

help us to take up the shield of faith and keep on praying in the Spirit;

in Jesus’ powerful name. Amen.
