‘For nothing will be impossible with God.’  Luke 1.37 (NRSV)

When Mary wonders how she, as a virgin, can have a child, the angel tells her that nothing is impossible with God. At times, it must have seemed impossible to the people of Israel that conflicts with their neighbours or their exile would ever come to an end, but God promises ‘a great light’ – a child who will be called ‘Prince of Peace’.

It’s often hard to believe that nuclear weapons will ever be done away with, but with God, everything is possible. Jesus, through his birth, ministry, death and resurrection, brought hope to the world – a hope that will never fail us, even in the darkest times. So let’s keep praying!

The nuclear world

We pray for the leaders of the nuclear-armed states, that they might govern with justice and righteousness, and engage in diplomacy to reduce the number of nuclear weapons. We pray against the flawed trust that so many people put in nuclear deterrence.

The work of CCND

We give thanks for Martin Tiller and everyone from CND, The People’s Assembly Against Austerity and other organisations, who took part in the budget eve protest outside Downing Street against the government’s spending priorities. These include the plan to buy 12 nuclear-capable F-35A fighter jets. We pray for the Members of Parliament who have received CCND postcards signed by people at Greenbelt. Could our government possibly change its priorities?

We give thanks for our social media and new followers. May our posts attract more people and encourage them to support our work for nuclear disarmament. We also pray for a new Treasurer to take the place of Aaron, who is now training for the Roman Catholic priesthood.

Our CCND family

We give thanks for James, our Membership and Outreach Officer, and pray for him as he works on initiatives to help us to grow in our support of each other.

We pray for all of our members and supporters as Christmas draws near. May we have opportunities to speak about the Prince of Peace and his desire for justice and peace in the world today.

A prayer

May there be peace – even where it’s impossible. Even for the unlikely. Even for the “undeserving”.

With thanks to someone who visited our stand at Greenbelt this year
