Statement on bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Christian CND is coordinating the signing of a statement to mark the 75th anniversary of the bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The statement notes that not only did the bombings kill hundreds of thousands of people but they left many more dealing with the environment, physical and psychological damage, which continues to this day.

Hiroshima Day on 6 August and Nagasaki Day on 9 August are marked around the world, remembering those who died and suffered but also as an opportunity to redouble our efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons so we can truly say “never again”.

Christian CND believes that nuclear weapons, with their capacity to kill millions of innocent people, are contrary to the teachings of Jesus and therefore incompatible with our faith. In addition the situation with Covid-19 had shown both the need for the international community to work together against the threats we face in the 21st century and for money to be invested in socially productive activities.

We hope that many clergy and other leaders within denominations will sign the statement, showing the unity among Christians in the UK in opposing nuclear weapons.

Please contact those in positions of leadership within your local denominations and ask them to add their name to the statement.
