Barbara Eggleston memorial lecture

Christian CND members and supporters gathered in Brighton on Saturday 8 June to remember Barbara Eggleston, an inspirational campaigner and leader within Christian CND who died in 2002. It is hoped that this will be the first annual event in Barbara’s memories to look at a range of issues within the Christian peace movement, with a focus on nuclear disarmament.

Friends House was the venue for the day and around 35 people joined Christian CND Executive members to hear from Valeri Flessati on the beginnings of campaigning on nuclear disarmament in the Christian community. Bruce Kent then spoke about the progress on nuclear disarmament within the churches in the UK.

Among those in attendance were several members of Barbara’s family including her brother who spoke about his memories growing up with Barbara. Various others in attendance shared their memories of Barbara and her tireless campaigning for a nuclear weapons-free world.

After a shared lunch there was an opportunity to share ideas for campaigning locally, continuing Barbara’s legacy on a range of issues.

After the success of this even we hope to take next year’s Barbara Eggleston Memorial Lecture to a different part of the country in 2020 as part of Christian CND’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Keep an eye on the website and Ploughshare for more information.
