This month we reflect on some quotations from the Powers trilogy by Walter Wink.
‘Each one of us is responsible for the sins of our own nation, whether we condone them or not.’ [Unmasking the Powers, Chapter 4]
- We recognise that we ourselves, in a nuclear-armed state, need to come before the Lord in repentance
‘Humans can change things, but not if they are so naïve as to think that they are only changing human things.’ [Naming the Powers, Chapter 5]
- We pray, not against politicians or nations, but for them, recognising that ‘our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.’ (Ephesians 6.12, NIV)
‘Nations cannot escape the effects of the Fall… but they can recover a sense of their divine vocation and manifest flashes of what will be when God is effectively sovereign over all creation.’ [Unmasking the Powers, Chapter 4]
Let us pray:
- We pray that each nation, starting with our own, would turn from its errors and become an influence for good in the world
- We give thanks for CCND’s conference and AGM in October; we pray for our executive committee, including new member Jane Robson, and for all our members and work over the coming year
- We give thanks for the Franco-British Collective for Nuclear Disarmament and Security Conference in October and pray for the release of their statement in early November
- We pray for the effectiveness of CND’s People not Nukes campaign and our social media posts on it over the next few weeks
- We pray for the first Review Conference of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), taking place from 30 November to 4 December at the UN in New York (see https://www.icanw.org/first_review_conference); and for the Joint Interfaith Statement, which CCND has endorsed
A prayer
Almighty Father,
whose will is to restore all things
in your beloved Son, the King of all:
govern the hearts and minds of those in authority,
and bring the families of the nations,
divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin,
to be subject to his just and gentle rule;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
