Ash Wednesday Witness 2021

Those taking part in the service hold up individuals and places which have suffered the consequences of war and nuclear testing

On Wednesday 17 February more than 150 people gathered on Zoom for the annual Ash Wednesday Witness and Resistance hosted by Christian CND and Pax Christi. The event usually takes place outside the Ministry of Defence in London, the first time in 35 years that this hasn’t been able to happen.During the service there were readings, prayers for peace and reflections on those who have suffered, and continue to suffer as a result of conflict and nuclear weapons.

As well as lamentation and repentance for the role of the UK in conflict and the continued policies to pursue nuclear weapons modifications there was chance to give thanks for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the states which have shown such leadership in bringing it into legal force. We also gave thanks for those Christian leaders, including Pope Francis, who have been so supportive of the Treaty.

Those in attendance also planted seeds together as we look forward to the new life promised by Jesus Christ through his death and resurrection at Easter.
