Anniversary of UN Resolution on nuclear weapons

Thursday 24th January marks the 73rd anniversary of the first motion passed by the United Nations. The motion concerned nuclear weapons, and how the world needed to act to rid them from the arsenals of the world.

The motion was unanimously agreed at the time, but despite the passing of 73 years, there are now more nuclear weapons in the world and more states possessing them. History has shown us both the catastrophic damage nuclear weapons can cause when they are used, but also how easily it is for accidents to happen.

Christian CND continues to work and pray for a world free of nuclear weapons. We believe that they are contrary to Jesus’ teaching in the New Testament and threaten the creation which we have been commissioned to steward.

Please join us as we pray for the United Nations to continue to seek a path towards total nuclear disarmament. There are many ways in which this can happen, not least the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the Non-Proliferation Treaty. A meeting on the latter will take place in New York later this year, and Christian CND will be in attendance.

You can view the original document with the motion online.
