On Saturday October 24 Honduras became the 50th state to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which will now enter info force on January 22 2021, making nuclear weapons illegal. The International community has been behind efforts to ban nuclear weapons for many years, culminating in this new Treaty, which was agreed at the United Nations in 2017.

Despite more than 120 states voting in support of the Treaty and the widespread support it has received from every continent, the nuclear-armed states, including the United Kingdom, have so far failed to engage in any way.

Instead the UK is pressing ahead with plans to replace and upgrade our nuclear weapons system, known as Trident, at an estimated cost of £205 billion pounds. The past year has highlighted starkly that nuclear weapons do nothing to keep us safe against the threats we face in the 21st century.

The UK, and other nuclear-armed states, can sign the Treaty without having a disarm first. Our nuclear weapons would need to be removed from operational status and a transition plan put in place for their eventual decommissioning.

Successive UK governments have stated their ambition for a nuclear weapons-free world. Now is the chance to prove it by signing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and cancelling the plans to replace Trident.

Support the nuclear ban treaty

We, the undersigned, call on the government to:

  • Sign and ratify the TPNW
  • Commit to cancelling the replacement of Trident, Britain's nuclear weapons system
