Way back in 1968, the UK signed the UN Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, promising that they would “pursue disarmament in good faith”. But in 2021, the government announced they were going to increase the UK’s nuclear stockpile by 45%! And they are investing £billions in a brand new fleet of nuclear attack submarines.
The UK currently has about 225 nuclear warheads, and each one of them is eight times more powerful than the nuclear weapons used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. In today’s war-torn world, the last thing we need is more nuclear weapons.
We call on the UK government to stand by the promise they made to pursue disarmament in good faith.
