United States to leave the INF Treaty

Christian CND is deeply concerned at the announcement today (Tuesday 4 December) that the United States will withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, also known as the INF. President Donald Trump had previously announced his intention to withdraw, and made the formal announcement today.

The INF Treaty took around 2,000 nuclear weapons out of commission and by leaving the Treaty Donald Trump has increased the likelihood of a nuclear exchange in Europe, something which would have catastrophic consequences.

Christian CND supports international treaties and believes that a world of peace can only be achieved by working together. That is why we continue to support the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and call on the government to enter into the negotiations on nuclear disarmament which it calls for. It is why we support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and want to see the UK join the dozens of other countries which have signed it. It is why we pray that there will be a last minute change of heart from the United States, and urge our government to use all diplomatic pressures to ensure the INF survives.

As Christians, we believe that the government is on Jesus’ shoulders, and that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. Please join us as we pray and seek God to move in this vitally important matter. Alongside our prayers, we are also called to take action in support of peace. You can find our actions online here.
